Gawain Arrives at Fair Castle by Clive Hicks-Jenkins. Screen print signed by the artist. Edition size: 75, image size: 55.5 x 55.5cm, paper size: 70.5 x 69cm
Compare this image with the first in the series, ‘Christmas at Camelot’, and it is clear that the quest to find the Green Chapel has been the making of Gawain. Fully armoured, with a visor covering his face, he has become a figure at once powerful and flamboyant, his cloak flying behind him as he gallops along. The sinuous form of the vanquished serpent now finds an echo in the elaborate dance of the banner tied to his lance, and there on his shield is the five-pointed star – the pentangle – proof, if any were needed, of his knightly virtues.
