Covent Garden’s Blitz Club, a hang-out for the more esoterically-attired members of the London club scene at the turn of the 1980s, began life as a night with no name. But this relatively short-lived weekly knees-up gifted the world the New Romantic movement, and a host of ground-breaking visual and musical artists that the likes of even David Bowie eventually paid attention to. Wedged between two art schools, Blitz operated a strict door policy, the more unusual the better, and a sub-culture was created that’s still referenced to this day – bold, somewhat gender fluid and iconically good fun.
This second print in John Broadley's series of musically inspired prints takes its title from The Associates 1982 single Party Fears Two, a track that has one of my favourite opening verses...
"I'll have a shower
And then phone my brother up
Within the hour
I'll smash another cup"
