Information: A rare colour proof, aside from the edition of 75. This print is one of only five made for the opening of the Sir Gawain and the Green Knight exhibition at Martin Tinney Gallery, Cardiff. As Clive explains below, the finished edition took on a different palette.
"Each finished study for the Sir Gawain and the Green Knight series came at the end of a long process of invention in my studio, during which I’d play with forms, compositions and colours. These were the ‘completed’ images which provided the detailed maps for the prints, and were my templates for making the colour separations and Dan’s guides when mixing and printing layers of inks.
For the most part, Dan would carefully follow my finished studies, but as we became accustomed to each other and the process became more truly collaborative, he would occasionally offer a startlingly different palette to what I’d initially presented. My original palette for The Temptations, of which this early proof is an example, had been rich with tawny reds and ambers."
